Helpful Guide – Concrete Mixes

Concrete is a versatile and durable building material made from a mix of cement, water, sand, and aggregates such as gravel or crushed stone. When combined, these ingredients form a strong and solid material that hardens over time, making concrete ideal for construction, landscaping, and structural applications.

For a more convenient mix, ballast can be used instead of measuring sand and aggregates separately. Ballast is a pre-mixed blend of sand and gravel, which, when combined with cement and water, creates a consistent and reliable concrete mix.

Concrete’s strength, durability, and adaptability make it one of the most widely used materials in landscaping, from simple garden paths to large-scale structural projects. Choosing the right mix ratio ensures the concrete meets the demands of your project, whether it’s for foundations, driveways, patios, or reinforced structures.

Understanding Concrete Mix Ratios

Concrete mix ratios are typically expressed in the form of parts, such as 1:2:4,

  • 1 part cement
  • 2 parts sand
  • 4 parts aggregates

This means that for every part of cement, two parts of sand and four parts of aggregates are used. Adjusting these ratios alters the concrete’s strength and workability.

Some Common Concrete Mix Ratios and Their Applications

     1:2:3

A popular mix ratio for concrete is 1:2:3, which consists of 1 part cement, 2 parts sand, and 3 parts aggregates. The 1:2:3 mix ratio offers good strength and is easy to work with. It’s ideal for common DIY jobs such as shed bases.

1:3:6 (M7.5)

This mix consists of one part cement, three parts sand, and six parts aggregates. It’s commonly used for non-structural work like garden paths, bedding layers or minor landscaping projects.

1:2:4 (M15)

With one part cement, two parts sand, and four parts aggregates, this mix offers improved strength and is suitable for residential and light commercial construction. Suitable for non-load-bearing structures, simple foundations, and floor slabs. This ratio is also recommended for securing Fence Posts.

1:1.5:3 (M20)

Composed of one part cement, 1.5 parts sand, and three parts aggregates, this versatile mix is used for various construction projects, including light structural work, pavements, and driveways. It’s ideal for steps and paving to withstand continuous use and the elements.

1:1:2 (M25)

Featuring equal parts cement and sand, with two parts aggregates, this high-strength mix is often used in structural elements such as columns, beams and slabs.

Where there’s an M number shown in brackets, it refers to the construction grade of concrete, which indicates its compressive strength after 28 days of curing. The M stands for “Mix”, and the number represents the compressive strength of the concrete in megapascals (MPa).  The higher the M number, the stronger and more durable the concrete, making it suitable for more demanding construction applications.

Factors Influencing Concrete Mix Selection

When selecting a concrete mix ratio, consider the following:

  • Strength: Determine the minimum strength needed for your structure based on the project’s specifications.
  • Durability: Assess the environment and exposure conditions to ensure the concrete can withstand weathering, exposure, and other potential challenges.
  • Workability and Placement: Consider the ease of placing and finishing the concrete. A mix that’s too stiff or too fluid can be problematic to work with.

Mixing Concrete

Proper mixing ensures uniformity and strength in the concrete. For small projects, hand mixing on a clean, flat surface is acceptable. However, for larger projects, using a mechanical mixer is recommended to achieve a consistent mix. Always measure materials by volume or weight to maintain the correct proportions. Using a separate bucket of the same size for each material is a good tip and one of the easiest ways to measure. Although you can use a shovel, shovelling the same amount of material every time can prove difficult.

Water-Cement Ratio

The water-cement ratio is a critical factor in concrete mixing – the amount of water you use when mixing your concrete will affect its strength. Adding too much water will reduce the strength of concrete and may lead to cracking. Too much water can weaken the concrete, while too little can make it unworkable. Aim for a workable consistency that holds its shape without excessive water.

Understanding and applying the correct concrete mix ratios is essential for the success of any construction project. By selecting the appropriate mix and following best practices in mixing and curing, you can ensure that your concrete structures are durable, strong, and fit for purpose. These ratios are provided as a guide only and professional advice should be sought for your landscaping project.
