Installation Guide – Traditional Fencing

This fencing installation guide explains how to install domestic and featheredge fence panels, along with some top tips to achieve the best results. Installing fence panels is a rewarding project that can enhance the security, privacy, and aesthetic appeal of your outdoor space.

Top Tips for Fence Panel Installation:

  1. Plan Ahead: Measure the area where the fence will be installed to calculate the number of panels and posts required. Consider any slopes or uneven ground, which may require adjustments.
  2. Use Quality Materials: Ensure that all posts, panels, and fixings are of high quality and treated to withstand the elements, especially if the fence will be exposed to harsh weather.
  3. Check Local Regulations: Before installation, check with local authorities for any regulations regarding fence height and placement.
  4. Consider Post Depth: For stability, posts should be buried at least one-third of their height in the ground.

Step-by-Step Fencing Installation Guide:

  1. Preparation: Start by marking out the fence line with string and pegs to ensure a straight line. Dig holes for the fence posts at intervals that match the width of your panels. Typically, post holes should be at least 600mm deep.
  2. Installing the Posts: Timber or Concrete posts can be used. Place a post in each hole, ensuring they are level and upright. For extra stability, concrete the posts into place and allow the concrete to set fully before attaching the panels. Use a spirit level to make sure the posts are vertically straight.
  3. Attaching the Fence Panels: Begin at one end of the fence line. Position the first panel between two posts and attach it securely using screws or clips, or slot into the concrete. Ensure the panel is level before fixing it in place. Repeat the process, attaching each subsequent panel to the next post. It’s helpful to have an extra pair of hands to hold the panels while you secure them.
  4. Finishing Touches: Add post caps to the top of the posts to protect them from rainwater and to give a finished look. If using featheredge or lap panels, consider adding gravel boards at the base of the panels to protect them from moisture and prolong their lifespan. Finally, apply a wood preservative or stain to the fence to enhance its durability and appearance. Regularly check and maintain your fence by tightening loose screws and applying preservative as needed.
