Aggregate Installation Tips
Top tips to help you install decorative aggregates in your landscaping project. Click here to read more.
Aggregate Installation Tips
Measure the Area: Start by measuring the area where you plan to install the aggregate. This will help you calculate the amount of material needed. As a rule of thumb, a 50mm depth of aggregate is sufficient for most applications.
Clear and Prepare the Area: Remove any existing vegetation, debris, and soil from the area. Use a rake to level the surface, ensuring that it is even and free of any large stones or roots. If necessary, dig down to create a slight slope for better drainage.
Install a Weed Membrane: To prevent weed growth and reduce maintenance, lay a high-quality weed membrane over the prepared area. This will also help to keep the aggregate in place and improve the overall stability of the surface.
Add a Base Layer (If necessary): For driveways or paths that require additional stability, consider adding a base layer of crushed stone or hardcore before laying the decorative aggregate. This layer should be compacted to create a firm foundation.
Spread the Aggregate: Once the base layer and membrane are in place, evenly spread the decorative aggregate across the area. Use a rake to distribute the material to the desired depth (typically 50mm). For a neat finish, you can install edging around the perimeter to keep the aggregate contained.
Compact the Surface: After spreading the aggregate, lightly compact the surface using a garden roller or by walking over it. This will help to settle the material and create a stable surface.

Aggregate Aftercare Guide
Regular Cleaning: Over time, leaves, dirt, and other debris can accumulate on the surface of the aggregate. Regularly rake or blow away debris to keep the area clean. For light-colored aggregates, occasional washing with water can help maintain their brightness.
Weed Control: Despite the weed membrane, some weeds may still appear over time. Hand-pull any weeds that manage to grow, and consider applying a weed killer if necessary. Maintaining the membrane and top-up levels of the aggregate can help minimize weed growth.
Top-Up as Needed: Depending on the location and usage, the aggregate may shift or settle over time, requiring you to add more material to maintain the desired depth. Regularly check the surface and top up as needed, especially in high-traffic areas.
Rearrange for Aesthetics: In areas with heavier use or exposure to the elements, the aggregate may shift, leading to uneven coverage. Periodically rake the surface to redistribute the stones evenly and maintain a consistent appearance.
